Spam Settings: Whitelisting and Spam Threshold
Nedernet's mail server employs a spam-fighting tool called "spamassassin", which evaluates each incoming message for "spaminess", and assigns it a score based on many different criteria. If the score is greater than your "spam threshold" the message gets put in a folder on the server called "caughtspam". This folder is accessible via the webamil system at http://webmail.nedernet.net.
You can adjust your spam threshold using the "Spam" icon at the top of the webamil interface - a higher value will let more spam through but result in less real mail getting caught, and a lower value will catch more spam, at the expense of possibly catching more legit email. The default is 4, and seems to work well for most people.
If a certain email address keeps getting flagged as spam, you can "whitelist" that address by doing the folowing:
- Login using your username (without the "@nedernet.net") and you password.
- Go to the "caughtspam" folder in the upper right drop-down box
- Either open each legitimate message and click "whitelist",
or check off each legitimate message in the message listing, and click "whitelist".
